Remodeling always begins with a question. How can we open up our home’s floor plan? How can we bring in more light? How can we tailor our home to fit our family’s changing lifestyle? In this, our Remodel Issue, you’ll find stories that begin with a design challenge, followed by the design team’s creative solution. In some cases it might be an interior refresh, changing out paint and trim. Other cases are more extreme, even involving the reconstruction of the entire home.

One California couple loved the Aspen location of their home, but they found it too dark. The solution? Remove the centrally located elevator. The result is a light and bright floor plan that the homeowners adore.

Kristen Adams of Rogan Adams Interior Design was looking for a new residence “with plenty of funk” for her family of five when she found a tri-level home in Greenwood Village near the neighborhood where she grew up. Realizing the home’s potential, Adams set about updating it, removing heavy woodwork and dark brown cabinetry, refreshing the color palette and gutting the kitchen. The revamped home is tailor-made for her brood—without losing that funk.

When a Boulder historic gem was listed for sale, the history-loving couple who bought it wondered: How do we keep the historical features and charm but update it to fit our lives? The answer involved opening up small rooms on the main floor to create a living space with easy flow that allows light to pour in.

And in Vail, we see Chris and Cindy Garvin’s decision to scrap original plans to renovate a rowhouse and instead entirely reconstruct it for a customized fit for their son and his family (with the rowhouse next door tailored to their other son). We review the remarkable result floor by floor here, with a preview on our print cover.

It’s a new year, the perfect time to start all those projects we’ve been considering. Roll up your sleeves and dive in—or, to make it easier, check out our Top Colorado Interior Designers List, they are waiting to help.

Happy New Year!
