Give Your Bathroom the Look and Feel of an Upscale Spa https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/bathroomplantdecor/ Thu, 09 May 2024 12:00:14 +0000 https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/?p=60164

Your bathroom, like every other space in your home, can use a bit of wow factor to turn the ordinary into an extraordinary environment. Houseplants that do well in humid, low, or medium light spaces offer a little zhuzh, creating a space that feels holistic and cleansing. There are several plant species perfectly suited to bathrooms that require only basic care. These are generally varieties that thrive in humidity. Since many bathrooms are windowless, low light plants are a great choice.

“Ivy, ferns, philodendrons, and air plants are all low maintenance and tend to grow beautifully,” advises Denver’s City Floral Garden Center. English Ivy helps absorb the moisture and humidity in your bathroom ridding it of mildew and mold. A trailing plant, English Ivy creates an elegant look. Philodendrons are also trailing plants. With their larger leaves, they offer a bit of drama in rich shades of light and dark green.

Photo: Massaro Images

Eucalyptus and Aloe plants do very well in warm, humid settings and are known for their medicinal benefits. Eucalyptus offers a distinctive, fresh scent reminiscent of a day at a luxury wellness retreat. Aloe plants can be used by extracting the juice from the leaves and applying it to the skin to keep it healthy. Especially soothing for sunburn, the aloe plant has a reputation for healing.

Tropical plants will flourish in a space with a light source. If your bathroom has windows, consider the Peace Lily with blooms of white, a Lemon Lime Prayer Plant, a Majesty Palm, or a Pothos Plant which only needs watering when the soil is completely dry. Ferns are also great choices for medium light. Kangaroo and Boston Ferns love humidity and spread their leaves to offer a lively pop of green.

Photo: Massaro Images

Another way to incorporate nature into your bath is a preserved living wall. Available in almost any size, a living wall contains green moss that is preserved at the height of its beauty. Requiring no water or sunlight, only an occasional dusting keeps your greenery virtually maintenance free and lends a Zen, harmonious touch to your space.

Silk plants are as beautiful as their live counterparts without any of the maintenance. Consider purchasing high quality, silk plants to liven up your bathroom space. Beck’s Silk Plant Co. points out that, “A huge variety of silks are available, and the difference is barely discernible.” No matter what you select, with just a little effort, you can use plants to create a stunning effect.

How These Organic Materials Beautify these Luxury Bath Remodels https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/setinstone/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 16:00:16 +0000 https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/?p=57540

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO this year’s favorite baths? Organic materials. Marble, quartzite and stone dress multiple surfaces in these luxurious bathroom remodels. Ceramic tile, composed of natural ingredients including clay and sand, adds lively pops of color. And metal and glass elements give these spa-like sanctuaries some bling.

Cabinetry, showers and tubs feature simple lines, a style that allows the stone to be the focus. In the baths shown here, C2Design and Design Matters, continued the stone used for flooring onto shower surfaces. Other interior designers, including Collins Design + Remodel and Aspen Design House, used gleaming tile to create unique looks—black- and-white vintage and dark red seduction.

Whether the baths have a lot of space or a small footprint, smart storage solutions, including deep drawers and generous shower niches, solve homeowners’ needs. As designer Denise Taylor puts it, “There’s plenty of room for all the magic lotions and potions.”

Calm and Sophisticated

WHEN HOMEOWNERS JOHN AND LINDSAY LUTH decided to remodel their dated bath, they collaborated with designer Helly Duncan. Everyone fell in love with the arabesque tile, which they featured on the vanity wall. “We loved the scale and the pearlescent finish,” Duncan says. “That was our big, beautiful, discerning, elegant differential!”

In order to create a relaxing space, Duncan chose the same stone for the floors, shower walls and shower pan, albeit in different sizes and finishes: “Sometimes using the same materials can make a room soothing. The bathroom feels sophisticated, elegant and very calming,” she says.

Fixtures and lighting add glamour to the space. The barn-door hardware is brushed bronze, and the lighting brings in gold tones. When it came to choosing fixtures, Duncan advised the Luths to pick what they loved: “The homeowner was loving the champagne bronze, so we just went for it. Please do this for yourself—stop thinking about resale.”

A Classic Look

CORINNE EKLE OF C2DESIGN CREATED a tailored look for this bath remodel by layering luxurious materials. For the floors, she designed a basketweave pattern using rectangular marble tiles, which were laid individually. “We created this really graphic but classic look,” she says. In the shower, the same marble in different formats creates a cohesive look.

Quartzite for the vanity countertops complements the bathroom’s marble, lighting and hardware. “Quartzite is such a beautiful stone,” Ekle notes. “It picks up the floors and the cabinets and the gold tones—it ties it in a bow!”

In the corner, Ekle angled a freestanding tub to take advantage of the lovely windows. Overhead, a chandelier finishes the look. “The blown-glass pieces are reminiscent of little flowers,” she explains. “This chandelier is light and airy, but there’s a sophistication to it in a whimsical way.” The client was immediately drawn to it: “With lighting, when you see it, you know it,” she adds.

Artistry and Restraint

DENISE TAYLOR AND GENEVA PODOLAK KNOX of Aspen Design House sum up the two inspirations for this bath: stone and color. “The wild colorful slab was the jumping off point for the bathroom,” Taylor says. The designers and homeowners knew they would need to balance the artistry of the vanity with restraint, while being careful to avoid anything boring.

Custom neutral cabinetry with a subtle metallic finish sets off the stone, while the faucets and hardware pick up on the surface’s gold veining. A bold shower complements the vanity. “One of the homeowners is colorblind,” Taylor explains. “Red is one of the colors he can see, so we knew we were going to incorporate red.”

To offset the linear shape of the room, the designers chose oval mirrors and custom oval lights. “They are artisan lights,” Taylor muses. “That would make me happy every day—having the lights be the jewelry of the room.”

Light-Filled Bath

A MODERN VINTAGE DESIGN by Delilah Collins pays homage to a historic home in Denver’s Washington Park. The homeowners inherited a quirky attic bathroom without natural light, but Delilah and her contractor husband, Mike Collins, worked their magic to create a functional, light-filled room.

Space had to be planned meticulously. In order to install a bathtub, Delilah got creative: “We installed a fixed piece of glass, which gave us a pillar for a shower curtain.” Getting light into the bathroom was also tricky. Delilah designed a pair of custom pocket doors that lead to a nook with a window. “There is now a sound and visual barrier but you still have natural light,” she says.

Ultimately, it is the tile that makes this bath so charming. “I’m a tile nerd,” Delilah admits. She created a pattern, which Mike installed piece by piece. “The floor tile is irregular because they are laced in together,” she says. “What I love about it is that it’s not perfect.”

5 Water Closets That Wow https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/5-water-closets-that-wow/ Mon, 16 Jan 2023 14:35:43 +0000 https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/?p=48131

The once-functional bathroom has gotten a makeover and has become a dream space for at-home wellness. The Colorado bathrooms featured in this story spotlight five trending styles—color, texture, tile, spa amenities and “it’s all in the details”—each of which achieves the functionality needed for everyday use, as well as providing a luxe space to indulge and unwind.

STATEMENT WALL

The homeowners of this skillfully crafted primary bathroom in Littleton had a few items on their wish list for their remodel, including a two-person steam shower and soaking bath. To fulfill those requests, the team at Christopher’s Kitchen & Bath knew a complete layout change was necessary. “We had to get creative for solutions and collaborate with the homeowners as well as all of the trades to bring our vision to life,” says designer Stanzie Lindaas.

The result is a luxurious, spa-like bath, featuring an asymmetrical vanity, glass-enclosed shower and repetitive geometric tile layout on a statement wall. “It is such a fun tile with all different pattern options, but the way it is laid out on the wall and spilling onto the floor is stunning,” says Lindaas.

Polished fixtures make a big impact on the serene space, and a mix of metals adds balance and warmth. “The crisp matte black hardware combined with the soft gold tones and walnut wood create a classic but exciting palette,” says Lindaas.

SPA VIBES

The homeowners of an exquisite Denver abode had a vision for their spare basement bedroom—transform the space into an in-home oasis. “After the pandemic, the clients realized that they would be more comfortable using a sauna at home instead of visiting their local spa,” designer Cecilia Tanoni explains. “We decided to work on a layout that would accommodate not only a custom sauna made of hemlock, but also a soaking tub, a complete shower system with body jets, a vanity area and WC, to create a whole spa experience.”

That experience was accomplished by using a simple materials palette, including walls and floors clad in Porcelanosa large-format tiles, creating the perfect backdrop for the ergonomically designed True Ofuro Japanese soaking tub. Towel warmer bars and a warming robe hook from Foursteel further enhance the spa experience. “By creating a minimal interior, we wanted this room to feel like a peaceful retreat, a kind of getaway built for relaxation, quiet contemplation and self-care.”

Once Gina D’Amore Bauerle of D’Amore Interiors finished updating the primary bedroom of a cozy 1990s Conifer log cabin, she knew a bathroom remodel was next. “The homeowners initially wanted to wait a year for the bathroom update but asked to start the remodel just a month later,” Bauerle explains.

The original bath was tiny and awkward, in need of a facelift. Bauerle immediately drew up some concepts, paying close attention to the homeowners’ must-haves—which included separate his-and-her vanities, a freestanding bathtub and a private water closet. “It was tricky, like a game of Tetris,” says Bauerle, “to create these areas with little space.”

With creative thinking and months of hard work, a spacious spa-like bath was achieved. A dreamy freestanding tub rests beneath a striking silver-leaf antler chandelier. Texture and shape abound in the handsome log walls, metallic black brick and white river-stone shower tile and agrestic floor tiles that resemble large barnwood planks.

The layers of color and texture establish a harmonious environment of understated luxury. “The homeowners love their new bath,” says Bauerle. “It feels like a modern mountain spa oasis.”

Sophisticated jewel tones inspired the design of this private sanctuary in Centennial. Stanzie Lindaas, designer at Christopher’s Kitchen & Bath, worked closely with the homeowner to infuse emerald green throughout the mindfully curated space. The rich shade of green is found on the cabinetry, accented by mixed brass and matte black metal fixtures. “Behind the beautiful and unique cabinet fronts is an abundance of functional storage for all different bathroom things,” says Lindaas.

Adding drama to the room, an airy walk-in shower is dressed in 3D-shaped wall tiles. “The 3D shapes of the wall tiles complement the pattern in the floor tile and have a nice gloss finish to subtly shine behind the matte shower fixtures,” Lindaas explains. Frosted glass panels cocoon the shower, ensuring privacy and allowing light to filter through.

A “glitzy textured wallcovering” cloaks the vanity area, where the homeowners enjoy getting ready for the day. “The homeowners’ style is full of modern elegance,” says Lindaas. “This was achieved in the overall design of the space.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

The impressive tile work in this Lafayette primary bath makes a bold statement throughout the intimate space. Stephanie Waddell of Istoria Interior Design mixed tiles of different colors and textures to create a multifaceted look. “This room illustrates how attention to unique details can yield an unexpected layered effect,” she says.

The distinctive kintsugi tile in the shower employs the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer. “I adore the moody green shower-surround tile,” Waddell explains. “The kintsugi tiles have thin gold lines running across them in random directions.”

A custom-designed walnut vanity with tambour door panels and a brass toe kick rests atop a glossy black marble mosaic floor tile. Grand views of the landscape are visible from the shapely freestanding tub. “My favorite feature is the mixture of the elements and what they create together,” says homeowner Blake Eilser. “Between the view and the bathroom itself, I don’t know what I enjoy more.”

4 Things to Consider Before Your Master Bathroom Remodel https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/4-things-to-consider-before-your-master-bathroom-remodel/ Tue, 14 Jun 2022 20:22:09 +0000 https://www.coloradohomesmag.com/?p=41670

When thinking about a master bathroom remodel, there are several things to consider. A master bathroom should be a tranquil oasis, a space that is away from the rest of the home and its worries or concerns. In order to create this oasis, it’s important to think about these four things before you embark on your remodel journey.

Aesthetic

Emr 0070

For most homeowners, this is the most important aspect of the design process. Having a clear idea of the look you want to achieve is important and helps design decisions later on go smoothly. This also gives your designer a starting place to begin to look at materials and finishes.

Layout

Emr 4576

The layout is arguably the most challenging part of a bathroom remodel. Space is in short supply, and designers have to do their best to strike a balance between not enough storage and not enough open space. A great master bathroom has plenty of storage while still feeling inviting, open, and bright.

Materials

Emr 4524

Materials can really shine in a master bathroom. Decorative tile inlays are a great way to bring beauty and an artistic flair into the space, giving homeowners a chance to be a little more adventurous than they might be in other areas. Textures, colors, and lighting are all great areas to jazz up a master bathroom and help to create that tranquil oasis we are all looking for.

Budget

Emr 0837

As with any remodeling project, the budget is the most important part of the process. A budget should break down roughly like this: 40% for cabinetry, 25% for stone/tile, 15% for plumbing fixtures, and 20% for labor. These percentages can vary depending on what you like and what you value, but this is a good general breakdown to keep in mind.

PROJECT INFO Historic renovation in Denver’s Highlands neighborhood, 220-square-foot bathroom

DESIGNER’S TAKE When Anna Slade and her husband Isaac purchased a restored 1890’s William Lang Victorian, they slowly set about updating elements of the home while maintaining its historic charm.

The original bath (shown here) adjoins the tub room through the double doors. “There wasn’t room for a separate tub and shower in the bathroom,” says Slade, “and since a bathtub is a must for me, I decided to give it a prime spot in the turret.”

The light-filled room is a retreat from the Slades’ busy life. “I wanted this space to feel like a peaceful retreat from the busyness of life.”

DESIGN TIP “If you set out to renovate a historic home, plan to start with structural and electrical repairs—they’re unavoidable, and it’s less costly and stressful to fix them up front than inevitably having to stop a project and do them anyway. ” — Anna Slade

DESIGNER’S TAKE “The clients wanted their home to reflect Modern Farmhouse elements, and to celebrate natural light and natural materials,” says Kaufman. “So we brought in neutral textures and tones to play off the natural light, which helped us create a relaxing space. Incorporating elements of nature—like the wallpaper and the reclaimed wood stool— speaks to the clients’ love for Colorado and the mountains.”

DESIGNER’S TAKE “The house is in a Mountain Modern style, so we were going for something strong yet organic,” says Interior Designer Linda Eyles.

To achieve that balance, Eyles juxtaposed strong black marble tile and white walls with natural wood cabinets and hardware with a warm finish. “The contrasts are sharp, and yet the space comes off as warm and welcoming because of the rich textures and brassy-gold accessories,” says Eyles.

Design Tip “The bath had a small footprint, so to make the space feel larger, we carried the mosaic floor tile all the way up the vanity wall. Also, the asymmetrical window location and mirror needed to complement each other and not fight for attention, so the asymmetrical swagging pendant selection was a huge part of that decision process.” — Pamela Chelle

DESIGNER’S TAKE “Having open-minded clients who don’t fear color is such a treat! Never once did they want to reign in the design and play it safe, says Interior Designer Momo Wong.

“They shared a photo of Denver Damask wallpaper (a collaboration between WallTawk’s Batya Stepelman and Denver-based artist, Meredith Feniak) at our first meeting, and we knew we had to use this amazing wallpaper somewhere in the house. We were able to customize it by selecting our own paint color (Benjamin Moore 588, Luck of the Irish).”

Design Tip “Powder rooms are a great place to add color and wallpaper. It’s a small space, so spending a bit more per square foot doesn’t break the budget, and it’s a room that everyone will use, so it’s a great space to have some fun!” — Momo Wong

PROJECT INFO Renovation of a downtown Denver loft, 60-square-foot guest bath

DESIGNER’S TAKE “We strived to maintain the industrial details of the original loft space while incorporating finishes and fixtures reminiscent of Brooklyn lofts, where the owners, Charlotte and Heimata Rutgers previously lived,” says Chris McGovern.

“The column was original to the space and initially posed some challenges. We landed on an asymmetrical sink placement but extended the vanity the full length of the wall, which provides ample counter space and additional open shelving underneath. For the cabinet, the millworker used reclaimed wood that complements the original column.”

Design Tip “In this case, we custom-fabricated the vanity, but even when using ready-made vanities, custom-fabricate your countertop. This allows you to use the same material for other accents like shower niche shelving, door saddles, and a custom backsplash.” — Chris McGovern

My husband, Scott, and I bought our house five years ago and did three months’ worth of cosmetic adjustments before we moved in.

The one room we didn’t really address was the bathroom we use every day. And so, the room has never lived up to the rest of the house, and my husband wasn’t happy.

I wasn’t in a rush, mainly because I knew it would be pricey to renovate the embarrassingly large space, and I would rather spend money on art.

But then Aspen Leaf Kitchens founder/dear friend/Circle of Excellence Winner Mark Haynam dropped by with his wonderful adult children (it’s a family business) during Covid, bearing a rather large gift. “I know you want to redo this bathroom, and this is my gift to you,” he said. What does a person say to that but a very large thank you? (I think that at the time I may have been too dumbstruck to actually say anything, so thank you, Mark!)

Herein, key stops along the journey.

Accessories Green side table from BLOOM By Anuschka, small rug from Artisan Rug. Devil’s surfer lithograph by Don Ed Hardy and perfect cloud by Adam Umbach.

1. BATHROOM CRAMMING

I took the advice I’ve heard over and over from interior designers and scoured lots of mags, books (especially Barbara Sallick’s “The Perfect Bath”), and went into a Pinterest coma until Scott and I were able to agree on a plan.

We settled on simple-looking wooden cabinetry with bottom drawers big enough for Costco-sized products, a quartz countertop, old-school brass fixtures, and the coolest tile we could find (we wanted the place to feel like a sea of blue), and we traded the floor-to-ceiling mirrors for smaller ones (at this point in life, mirrors are not an asset), so we could hang two pieces of wonderful art.

2. CABINETRY

I attempted to articulate our idea, Mark sketched, we refined, and his Colorado-based crew built a sample front. We tweaked color, simplified design, and decided that four drawers x 2 equals a small fortune in drawer pulls, so we opted out of the extra hardware.

Mark suggested a small cabinet to cover some of our shelves, and we agreed. The team sent me a contract that included a delivery date with a three-month lead time and made good on it—to the day.

Beboulderphotography Katemeyersbathroom 5

The Life Aquatic A favorite dipped piece by Oliver Jeffers pairs nicely with Decorative Materials phosphorescent rockstar tile.

3. TILE

We spent a long time trying to come up with genuine English words to describe our vision to the lovely team at Decorative Materials (“unique … blue like the sea… ” ), but our apparent lack of precise adjectives could only be solved by browsing their Design Center showroom. About 30 minutes in, we saw this pop of phosphorescent aqua and stood gobsmacked.

Of course, it was from Italy, and when I heard the price, I realized that I should have just walked in and said, “Hey, what’s the most expensive tile you have?”

After we recovered from the price-per-square-foot sticker shock, we decided that this would be our major splurge. And as soon as it was on our floor, we regretted not a penny.

It’s really the superstar of the bathroom and when my friend, developer Fiona Arnold, saw it, she suggested we go up the wall with it, and so we brought it up like wainscoting, framing the existing Kohler tub. Brilliant call.

Beboulderphotography Katemeyersbathroom 7

The Bunny Shrine Our private bath offered the ideal showcase for our collection. Side Controls Kohler’s multi-option toilet.

4. FIXTURES

Bonnie Lyons at Ferguson helped me find new Brizo fixtures that worked with our existing plumbing. When remodeling, it’s imperative to have someone who speaks plumbing.

Bonnie does, and she’s a knowledgeable and patient soul. I wasn’t immune from the supply chain blues, but every time I called to ask, “Where are my handles/overflow drain/etc.?”, there was a very nice person on the phone who had an answer or a date of delivery.

5. TOILET

I can’t be shy here, because I want to share the magnitude of my good fortune. Scott spends a lot of time in Japan, and there are many great things about that country; not unimportant among them are the toilets.

Whether you’re in a luxury hotel or a highway rest stop, the loos are creative, sparkling clean works of perfection that offer a variety of settings, sprays, sounds, and warmth. (During my visit, I couldn’t stop thinking about what such loos could do for the Jersey Turnpike).

The wonderful Shannon Furgason at Kohler came through with an American version (complete with remote), and it has been—and will be—a joy of my dotage. Yes, you read that right—a joy.

6. GENERAL CONTRACTOR

I wanted my marriage to survive the remodel, so we hired Karpov Construction to oversee the tearing out of floors and mirrors, the installation of radiant heat, etc.

The brothers Karpov (Vladimir and Dima) were always on time, on point, and quick to respond to questions or concerns. Their estimate and bill were incredibly in sync, and their no-B.S. style is totally my style.

Plus, their tile person, Zaza, is like the Michelangelo of tile. I do not say this lightly. A fabulous tile person is worth his weight in rubles.

Beboulderphotography Katemeyersbathroom 6

Extra Storage Family heirloom vase, photos and extra towels rest above a closed-door cabinet that hides cleaning necessities.

7. SUPPLY CHAIN PATIENCE

The tub handles are still AWOL (and that’s a problem by which I’m amused). Someday we’ll get a killer light fixture, but that will happen after the bank account recovers.

We did find the perfect floor accoutrements at Artisan Rug and a side table from BLOOM by Anuschka. My husband promises me a shelf for the tub. So, like most home projects, this one will be ongoing.

8. GRATITUDE & ART

I offer more thanks than I can say to the Aspen Leaf Kitchens crew, Bonnie, Shannon, and the Karpov Construction team. We have the perfect bathroom, complete with ART (dipped print by Oliver Jeffers and devil surfer by tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy).

If there’s a better throne out there, I don’t’ care! I love mine. Plus, I put it down here for posterity: My husband was right. Totally worth it

Hello, Fabulous!

We are honored to present the architects, designers, and landscapers who make up the 2021 Fabulous List. We do not take the “F” word lightly, nor bestow it easily. We couldn’t create this magazine without their contributions and support.

Our list is composed of those whose designs have been featured in CH&L over the past two years and gives ongoing kudos to our Circle of Excellence winners, who continue to produce beautiful, soul-full, sustainable projects here in Colorado.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You have earned the honor, and we’re proud to call you what you are: fabulous.

Cheers,
Kate & the CH&L team

A master bathroom should be a place of refuge—a calm, serene space to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our clients for this project wanted their master bathroom to feel open and inviting, while at the same time offering distinctive features reminiscent of a spa experience.

Emr 4524

The beautiful decorative tile inlays in the center of the room and on the wall leading into the walk-in closet add interest and personality to the space. The marbled floor tile sets off the Iron Ore finished cabinets beautifully, and helps tie the entire bathrooms color palate together.

The bath and shower are separated by the tile dividers, helping to segment to the space, while keeping everything open and airy. The curb-less shower has floor to ceiling tile, offering a beautifully enclosed space that is necessary for the steam functionality (a must have in our dry Colorado environment).

The tub (shown above) is sleek and elegant, but not too contemporary—a perfect match for the rest of the bathrooms aesthetic. The cabinet and shelves offer just enough storage for all of our clients’ bath accessories, and the bench seat gives them a nice place to sit while they wait for their bath to fill.

Emr 4592

The main part of this bathroom features a wide double vanity, which provides ample storage. Wall mounted faucets and Robern vanity mirrors help keep the overall look clean and sleek, again striking a good transitional balance. The Robern mirrors have very good/even lighting, and the temperature of the lights can be adjusted between very warm and cool to offer the perfect kind of light for our clients’ preference. The finish on the vanity, Iron Ore, is the standout here offering inspiration for the backsplash and floor tile.

With the extra time many of us had on our hands during the pandemic, there was no better time to get to that home project we’ve been putting off. From simple DIY jobs like redecorating, to more extensive projects like kitchen or bathroom renovation, transforming our homes to fit our dream vision became a priority for many.

So, what room was the most popular to renovate in the last year? By collecting Google search data from 2020 to the beginning of 2021, new research shows that bathroom renovations appear top of the global search list. It seems having that special place to unwind with a relaxing bath or soothing shower carries plenty of value in every corner of the world.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite bathrooms featured in Colorado Homes & Lifestyles to serve up some design inspiration for you next bathroom reno. For a plethora of options, styles and more, head over to our Pinterest page and pin away.

A Garden of Serenity

Looking to add some tranquility to your bathroom? Check out this dreamy space in designer Margot Elena’s home. Within a 6-foot-deep pit sits this stunning sunken bath, with windows opening out onto serene private garden. Adding some plants, candles and other natural decor  soften the bathroom while pops of color add life and a boho-chic aesthetic.

A Dramatic Powder Room

Food blogger Tieghan Gerard wanted to add drama to the bathroom in her Colorado barn. Add some texture, like the furry rocking chair here, and consider using non-traditional tile to create a show-stopping space.

Want to add some pop to your powder room? Take a cue from Duet Design Group, who added this Ellie Cashman Design wallpaper to a refreshed Denver home, and chose texture, wallpaper or your favorite bright color to bring life to the space. Wary of wallpaper? Don’t be! Check out our interview with wallpaper maven Batya Stepelman and find something that’s just right for you.

The original claw-foot tub in a 100-plus-year-old Victorian’s guest bath in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Denver almost kept the room’s much-needed update from happening. Luckily, designer Linda McLean was able to convince the young couple that it was possible to keep the tub and update the space.

Simple and Chic

Can’t shake the white bathroom? We get it. Take a peek at interior designer Paige Blackburn’s classic master bathroom. Add a touch of marble to the floor plus warmth and softness through some wood and brass elements, and voila!

Bathroom on a Budget

This modern-farmhouse style loo, designed by Inside Stories, is made up of many affordable retail finds. A graphic pattern floor tile—Twenties Petal by Merola Tile at The Home Depot—a mirrored medicine cabinet and louvered vanity from Restoration Hardware, and the Princeton Mid Sconce by Schoolhouse all bring farmhouse charm to the room’s envelope, clad in painted-wood planks and white subway tile. Add colorful accessories to balance out the neutral tones.

Artful and Airy

Following the lead of this beautiful bathroom, adding art to the space can make it homey and reflective of your personal style. From prints and framed pieces to flowers, plants and textured towels, don’t shy away from adding your style to your bathroom.

A painting of Castle Rock’s 370-foot-high namesake butte to hang above the claw-foot tub in this historic 1890s barn. “The sink in the master bath is actually a drainboard sink; they were popular years ago for kitchens, since you could drain your dishes there,” says the homeowner.
