Savvy gardeners know the best time to prepare for the spring is in the fall. Plant blooming daffodils and crocuses in the ground before winter, so they can emerge through the snow with their dazzling shades of buttery yellow and deep purple. Spring dreams are planted in October.

How better to outfit next year’s garden than with treasures from Denver Botanic Gardens? The Gardens’ Fall Plant & Bulb Sale runs September 27 and 28 at the York Street location in Denver. The tried-and-true counterpart to the Gardens’ Spring Plant Sale, the fall event showcases bulbs but is well-rounded with something for every gardening or plant enthusiast.

Hundreds of flowering bulb varieties will be available. Think big-headed, purple ‘Globemaster’ allium, those fairy-wands of the garden bed; windflowers, or anemone, in saturated shades; tall, spiky foxtail lilies, also known as giant desert candle, native to the Tien Shan and Pamir Mountains in Central Asia; and spring favorites like snowdrops, iris and hyacinths. There will also be bulbs one might not readily consider, such as a wide array of garlic, grown at Chatfield Farms in Littleton.

Take home a little piece of the Gardens. There will be plants for sale that have been grown in the Gardens’ greenhouses and are perfectly appropriate for the Colorado climate, including Agastache, phlox, salvia, penstemon and others, as well as custom seed mixes curated by Gardens horticulturists.

Not really an outdoor gardener? Houseplants and succulents will be for sale, too. Plus, the Gardens’ horticulturists will be onsite, available to answer questions and offer advice. Take advantage of this opportunity to get helpful info from the professionals instead of ChatGPT. The Shop at the Gardens will also be open. Find gardening tools, outdoor décor and the perfect pots for new purchases.

The Preview Party takes place Thursday, September 26 for those who’d rather not wait. This ticketed event offers exclusive access to the sale before it opens to the public, plus wine, beer and a spread of treats to sip and nibble while shopping. Admission to Fall Plant & Bulb Sale is free, but registrations must be made in advance.
